The Humane Society of Pinellas will be closed to the public through Thursday due to Hurricane Isaac – but all the adoptable pets have already left the shelter.
HSP put out a call for volunteer foster homes late last week, and the response was tremendous. 88 adoptable pets were sent to foster homes Saturday and Sunday to keep them out of the path of Hurricane Isaac.
Twila Cole, Director of Development, Community Relations, and Special Events, said Sunday, “We were so moved by the great outpouring of support from our community. Our shelter is not in an evacuation zone, but our kennels are outdoors. So many people came out to help keep our pets safe. We are hoping some of the foster parents will fall in love with the pet and want to adopt permanently!”
Fostered pets are expected to return to the shelter and be available for adoption again Thursday, assuming the weather allows and the shelter does not sustain too much damage.
People who want to help but were not able to foster can still help by donating bleach, paper towels, sheets and blankets, and industrial trash bags to clean up the facility after the storm. Supplies can be dropped off Thursday at 3040 State Road 590 in Clearwater.
